Evaluating British Capital Market Trends for 2026

The UK's economy grew by 0.5% in February, according to data from the Workplace for National Data (ONS). The figure comfortably beat the consensus forecast of just a 0.1% increase, indicating the economy remained in much better health than thought by most economists. The reading was based upon information from before the outbreak of war in the Middle East that sent energy prices surging and shook confidence across the economy.

Earlier today, the UK saw the most significant cut to its yearly development forecast from the IMF amongst advanced economies, with the figure now anticipated to be down from 1.3% in 2015 to just 0.8%. Another concern is that the reading being up until now off forecasts may suggest the figures are being distorted by seasonality, or other concerns in how the information is collected.

"Although the survey proof suggested an acceleration in output, no analyst expected the 0.5% month-on-month rise. "On an annual basis, development got from 0.7% to 1.0% as a strong February offseted a frustrating end to 2025. "Sadly, the start of the Iran war on 28 February will stop the upswing in its tracks.
